Filipino Fridays 2014 #2 – Have you ever wanted to write a book?

It’s week 2 of Filipino Fridays, a run-up to the upcoming Filipino Readercon. This week’s prompt:

As a reader, have you ever thought about writing a book? What kind of books/stories do you want to write? Or are you now a published author, and what compelled you to go fulfil this dream? How was your journey from reader to writer? How did you go about getting your book out there?

Which leads me to a confession <insert deep, long, sorrowful sigh here> – –

Here’s the thing: I have a draft that’s been in progress for five years, and it’s still not even halfway done. I’ve been keeping notes and even parcels of the draft in another blog, and I even joined the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) two or three times just to push myself to complete it, but I’m still a long way off. I will finish it, though. I know I have to.

My dream is to contribute to the Filipino Christian Fiction genre, which I believe has a huge potential to reach people looking to be inspired and challenged by novels that tackle personal, spiritual themes and issues. From what I have seen Filipino Christian literature is 99% dominated by non-fiction works such essay anthologies, theological expositions and a few biographies, but I do believe there is room out there for the Filipino Christian Novel (on top of the few that delve on social themes). So this draft I’ve been working on falls under this yet-to-be-established genre.

There you go. I’ve put it out there. I’m embarrassed, but maybe this self-exposure will make me work harder to finish this draft sooner than ten more years from now.

For complete transparency I’m also confessing to having ghost-written a couple of self-help books: one on beauty (Argh, revealing this really hurts!), and another on wedding planning (This one actually made it to the National Bookstore bestseller list, haha!). I just have to make the disclaimer that these were written and published eons ago 🙂

  1. Yay to Filipino Christian Fiction. I would love to read one of those soon, hopefully. (Along the lines of Francine Rivers. Have you read her books? Or maybe Frank Peretti.)

  2. Haha! Yup, tried it a few times. Realized, though, that I really am physically incapable of writing fast! My guess is you’ll do much better 🙂 Let me know how it goes for you!

  3. Hi Pia!

You should try joining National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) this November! NaNoWriMo participants are tasked with finishing an entire novel (of at least 50,000 words) in one month. I also have story ideas in my head and in small drafts. I’m hoping that being “forced” to write fast will allow me to finish a rough draft on an entire novel, which I can then edit afterward. 🙂
